Attention, memory & communication
Attentional demands of language use, dual-task interference, and sustained attention during complex multitasking.
Resource competition during communication
This research characterizes the attentional and memory demands of communication and their effects on concurrent task performance. We investigate interference between conversation and visuomotor activity and task-dependent effects of verbal processing.
Dual-task experiments and driving simulation examine which properties of verbal activity predict interference and how linguistic demands interact with the requirements of concurrent tasks.

We examine sustained attention during complex multitasking, including changes in performance over time and the effects of concurrent task demands. Behavioral studies relate vigilance performance to the demands of verbal and visuomotor activities.
Recent published work examines sustained attention in complex multitasking scenarios, extending the lab’s research on communication and concurrent task performance.
